Compaq Contura Aero 425 – 433C Repair Notes

#1 problem - the right hinge wears and freezes, causing the screen case to break.  Clean and lubricate the hinges, and replace the right one if it shows any signs of stiffness.

#2 problem - The video cable works loose at the point that it connects to the motherboard.  Reseat at both ends.

#3 problem - The hinge screws work loose with time, and can eventually cause the screen case to break.

Absolutely DO NOT disassemble the display panel assembly when it’s attached to the motherboard unit.  It WILL break the screen case.

They’re small, and everything wears at a high rate - common failures are Keyboard, trackball assy (which requires cleaning monthly or it becomes clogged with dirt and tears the rubber rollers inside).

Cable on the PCMCIA floppy drive breaks at the point of attachments.

A special Compaq PCMCIA driver was needed for proper floppy operation in Win95.

Inverter board often fails.

If screen case damage occurs, the video cable almost always needs to be replaced.
